Talk to KG Landscaping & Design on the Sunshine Coast today....

It is important to choose the correct Retaining Wall for your project. From Block Walls to Timber Sleeper Retaining Walls or Link Block Walls to Rock Retaining Walls they all serve differant applications... Although important, asthetics is not just the single most important thing to think off when choosing the correct retaining wall for your Landscaping Project... Certain materials used in the constuction process of retaining walls may not suit the requirements to sucsessfully maintain the single most important factor "to retain". The retaining wall that you may be able to build in Caloundra to Kawana and be very successful may not be sutiable in areas such as Buderim  and Nambour where the Ground is more rockier.

Other Factors to take into consideration are initial construction costs as well as future replacement construction costs... For example over a 20 - 40 yr life time if you built a Treated Pine or Hardwood Sleeper Retaining Wall along side a section of your project that you know you will have difficulties getting back into in the future costs are doubled...These walls will have to be replaced in approx 15 - 20 yrs max so this would be twice the costs in the same time that say a block wall would last 40 - 50 yrs...

The following are some examples of Retaining Walls that work sucsessfully on the Sunshine Coast;

Block Retaining Walls - Lifespan 40 - 50 Yrs

Block Retaining Walls are one of the most structural walls you can build, with steel and concrete footings that generally have a toe in the ground and by placing steel both vertically and horizontally in the wall prior to core-filling with concrete these walls are very strong and permanent... There are several applications for finishing that include plain face finish blockwork to rendering or crazy rocking to Tiling there are endless oputunities to dress these walls up to not only be very strong but very asthectic as well...

Sleeper Retaining Walls - Lifespan - 15 - 20 yrs

When we talk of Timber retaining Walls we generally mean Sleepers, There are basically two options here (Treated Pine or Hardwood)...  We generally use (unless other wise required)  Hardwood Posts concreted into the ground the same depth as the height of the wall and with a 450mm dia Hole... Posts must lean back to absorb ground pressure (1:10) and all wales should be screwed from behind the wall using galvanised batten screws. It is essential that these walls are lined with geotextile fabric prior to backfilling

Link Block Walls - Lifespan 20 - 30 yrs

Link block walls are great for those walls that require little to no space, most of the products associated with link block walls are great for walls 1.0m in height or under however there are blocks such as the GB Masonry Range like Tasman Blocks that you can build walls up to 4.0 m in height, Link Block Walls are built by digging a footing and placing the first course in the footing, surrounding in concrete then building up from there...

Rock Retaining Walls - Lifespan 20 - 30 yrs

Rock walls are very similar to Link block walls in Construction however differant Rock wall heights require differant construction methods... Rock varieties vary so its best to choose the kind of rock you ike to see if this suits your application...

Concrete Retaining Walls - Lifespan 20 - 30 yrs

There are more and more new retaining wall products coming onto the market all the time and Concrete Sleepers and Walls are very popular.. they are easy to construct and look very good and more importantly last a long time...

Always remember that a sucsessful Retaining Wall requires Drainage... All Retaining Walls and i mean all Walls will fail if there is no drainage installed... Ensure that your next retaining wall has a minimum of 100mm Socked Ag pipe installed as well as backfilled using 20mm Drainage stone...

Sunshine Coast Council Requirements on (Building a Retaining Wall on the Sunshine Coast) require that any Retaining Wall being built over the height of 1.0 m requires engineering designs and Council certification prior to construction.
