Lawn Grub and Army Worm Fact Sheet on removing this pest from your lawn in Queensland

Lawn grubs are a common Problem in South East Queensland in the period from November to May. They are a part of nature and are always present in our lawns and only become a problem when we change things like fertilizing and improve the health of the turf or plant. This article will demonstrate the differances of Lawn Grub and Army Worm and when you adequately spray lawn grub killer on turf you can remove these pests from your turf before Lawn Grub Infestation occurs

To test for lawn grubs:

A visual inspection of the leaves of the lawn can be done by tearing out some suspected leaves for a close inspection. During severe infestation there will be very little or no leaf at all. If you part the leaves and look at ground level, you may see some grub droppings amongst the thatch, which will indicate grubs are still present and treatment is vital.

Other methods for detecting Lawn Grubs are:
Flooding the lawn area with water, as this causes the lawn grubs to come to the surface and easily be seen
Leaving a wet hessian bag on the grass overnight will also bring the grubs to the surface, except this method needs to be checked before the temperature gets too hot (before 7am). 0-5 grubs per square method can be tolerated.

Once you have determined that the lawn grubs are still present, then treating them will depend upon how bad the damage is, if it is a new lawn you must spray lawn grub killer to control them because they can kill your lawn when it is younger than 1 year. If your testing has not produced any vital signs of grubs then they in fact may have moved on to another lawn area and treatment will not have any effect.

Any insecticide will do the job of controlling the grubs, there are many brands on the market, available from nurseries, hardwares and supermarkets, very importantly, follow the label and repeat treatment after 7-10 days, to break the cycle.

Prevention is the best way to manage lawn grubs, that is once your lawn has been established for more than a year, fertilizing your lawn in summer months (Jan-Feb) should be avoided if possible as this attracts lawn grub. Over fertilized lawns are prone to frequent attacks so apply your fertilizer correctly (i.e. Fertilize for growth not a deep green colour). Therefore, only spray if necessary.

POINTS TO REMEMBER
  • Only spray if the is evidence of lawn grubs present.
  • Follow label rates and direction.
  • Prevention is the best method.
  • Lawn grubs are apart of nature and are always present.
  • Only spray when protecting a new lawn or they are in plague portions.
