Couch Fact Sheet

This Couch Grass is a hybrid of common couch and was developed because of its fine leaf, deep green colour and strong growing qualities.  An excellent home lawn can be achieved by providing a regular maintenance program. by following these steps you Couch Lawn will look fantastic all year round

PREPARATION

Spray existing grass or weeds with Round Up or Glyphosate, 7 to 10 days prior to ordering lawn to kill all weeds (for an area of 100 sq.m. use 150ml Round Up to 15 litres of water).

Remove vegetation, with Bobcat, hand rake or hire a turf cutter.

In heavy soil or clay areas use Gypsum to break the soil up, at 25kg to 100m2, raked in.

Light/sandy areas use Dolimite / Lime raked into the soil at 25kg to 100m2.

Rotary-hoe or cover area with screened topsoil to a depth of 75 to 100mm, then level it by raking.

Lightly fertilize soil before laying turf with Crop King 88 – 4kg to 100m2.

LAYING TURF

Start laying turf at straight edge e.g. driveway, or set a string line.

Lay turf in brick pattern.

Ensure slabs are butted tightly together to prevent drying out.

For cutting turf around trees, garden beds and edges use a shovel or a large knife – cane knife.

On batters lay the turf across the slope in brick pattern.

Do not wait until all turf has been laid before watering; water it as you are laying the turf.

Hire roller and roll turf to smooth out all the joins.

Ensure turf is then thoroughly watered.

It is necessary to keep turf moist. Sandy soils will require more frequent watering.

On hot windy days and in summer, turf will be required to be watered twice a day for at least the first 10-14 days until roots are established. Then water at least twice a week in summer.

Over-watering is not recommended.

MOWING

The correct procedure of mowing this grass is critical. For the perfect lawn a cylinder mower is preferred.

Mow turf as soon as it takes root in the soil, usually 10-14 days depending on the time of the year.

Do not mow turf before it has taken root. For the first mow set height at approx. 35mm. then gradually lower height over the next 3 mows.

In summer mow approx every 10 days.

Ensure mower blades are sharp and remove grass clippings.

SCALPING OR SCARIFYING

Scalp the turf back within 25mm (1”) of ground level at the start of spring of early summer, as thick, dense thatch prevents moisture penetration and can cause fungal and disease problems. Then fertilize.

Another option is to scarify the turf to maintain a healthy lawn. All scarified material should be removed, the area fertilized and if necessary lightly top-dressed.

SPRAYING FOR LAWN GRUB

Lawn grub infestation usually occurs during the months of October to May. The small brown lawn grub moth, or the black and red wasp (a lawn grub predator), are indication of the presence of lawn grub.

Spray lawn with insecticide, ensuring that the manufacturer’s instructions are followed.

Respray in 10 days to break the cycle of the lawn grub.

FERTILIZING

To maintain the lawn in good condition it is recommended to regularly fertilise.

Fertilize at least 4 times a year.
